Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has started the distributing of food relief to fellow scribes that were greatly affected by the Covid 19 pandemic and the second lockdown of 42 days that ended last week.
While launching the campaign at UJA headquarters in Kawempe division, Kampala, the Association Spokesperson Kabuye Ronald revealed that they have so far mobilized a total of 1270 kg of maize flour and 100kg of beans from friends of the media.
Those who donated the food relief include a civil society organization, Making a Difference Face to Face (MADUFAFA), 1000Kg of Maize floor while Pastor Wilson Bugembe, Media Internship Center, Makidye Division Mayor Hajji Ali Mulyannyama Kasirye, Member of Parliament for Lubaga North Hon. Abubaker Kawalya Master M.S Real Property Developers and Mirandira Foundation donated 360kg of maize floor and 100kg of beans.
Kabuye applauded those that have chosen to stand with the journalists in the critical time before calling for more support from the friends of the Media.
In the same way, He said that UJA is in advanced stages of engaging media owners to rehire the laid off scribes.
On his part, Sam Mushabe, the Executive Director of MADUFAFA expressed disappointment with the way government and the public has sidelined the media yet they do a critical role of informing and educating them on the happenings
He said through their project “charcoal in the snow” where they are giving out food relief to those grossly affected bybthe pandemic, they realized that journalist were sidelined yet were as well affected by the pandemic since many lost their jobs while others were given non paid forced leave.
