RE: UPDF officers batter journalist again
Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) condemns the continuous acts of violence meted on journalists by the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF).
Its disheartening that on Thursday, 22nd, April, 2021, at 8pm, UPDF officers who were moving in a group stopped journalist Matovu Enock, a correspondent with NTV at Busimbi Gombolola in Mityana district, battered him and left him helpless.
The army officers allegedly first inquired if indeed he was Enock Matovu a journalist, before beating him up badly and telling him how he was on their wanted list for reasons they didn’t disclose.
Matovu is now under medical attention at Mityana Hospital. He lives in serious pain from his broken arm, back and sustained injuries.
What makes it more saddening is that,on Friday 16th of this very month the same army officers pledged not to attack journalists again during their football match and banquet with the National Association of Broadcasters(NAB) members and a few individual journalists at Lugogo stadium.
UJA is determined to continuously condemn, devise means of challenging such barbaric acts on different fronts through legal means and other means as stipulated in the constitution of Republic Uganda.
